The Alaska Railroad

FREE Event

Beginning May 15th, the Alaska Railroad launched its third annual Catch the Train Photo Contest through its website and social media channels with a new partnership to celebrate the centennial of Denali National Park and Preserve.

The submission period began Monday, May 15th and ends Sunday, December 10th. Entries can be submitted through a tab on the Alaska Railroad Facebook page (www.facebook.com/alaskarailroad), or via Instagram (@alaskarailroad) and Twitter (@akrr) by using the hashtag #CatchTheTrainAK. Photos can portray passenger or freight trains and must be at least 1,000 pixels, a quality readily available on most smartphones.

Following the submission period, twelve finalists will be selected, all of whom will be featured in the Railroad’s twelve-month 2019 calendar, appear in the Railroad’s onboard magazine panoramas and receive round-trip rail fare for two.

The grand prize winner, to be chosen from the twelve finalists via a public online vote, will receive the honor of the Alaska Railroad calendar’s cover, $1,500 and the Railroad’s new Denali Getaways package. This new package commemorates the park’s centennial with round-trip rail travel for four to Denali and overnight accommodations at the Grande Denali Lodge.

“We want our calendar to encompass Alaska and the beauty we at the Alaska Railroad witness every day. By using photography from local Alaskans and passengers from around the world who travel with us, we accomplish that,” said Dale Wade, vice president of marketing and customer service at the Alaska Railroad.

“This year’s contest is particularly special with the addition of our friends at the Grand Denali Lodge, who are helping make the centennial of Denali National Park one to remember, both through the prize for the grand prize winner and the Denali Getaways experience for our passengers this summer.”

The Alaska Railroad will announce twelve finalists on or around Monday, December 18th, which will also kick off the online voting period for the grand prize winner. The winner will be announced on or around Monday, January 8, 2018.

Entry for the Catch the Train Photo Contest is free, and individuals may submit an unlimited number of photos. The twelve finalists will be chosen on the basis of artistic merit, originality, subject and style. Entrants must be 18 or older as of December 10, 2017. All photos taken that are not in line with the Alaska Railroad’s safety protocols will be disqualified immediately.
