Cardboard City 2018 at the Alaska State Fairgrounds with Family Promise Mat-Su... Raise awareness of the Valley’s homeless situation and be a part of a night you’ll never forget. This family-friendly overnight event kicks off at 5pm on June 22nd at the green gate of the Alaska State Fairgrounds, and runs through 8am on June 23rd .

Cardboard City serves as Family Promise Mat-Su’s major fundraiser of the year.

Participants gather pledges and raise money to rent boxes to build their homes, or as of 2017, they can also outfit their vehicle. No campers or RVs are allowed. Those who spend the night gain a perspective of what it may be like if they found their family suddenly homeless. They will participate in a soup/bread line with items donated by local restaurants and bakeries, as well as meet families and hear testimonies from those who have been helped by Family Promise Mat-Su. There will be musical entertainment from the acoustic duo, Long Nights Moon. Kids are invited to take part in a decorating contest. Plus to help everyone wind down, there will be bedtime stories for the whole family.

About Family Promise Mat-Su:
Founded in 2005, Family Promise Mat-Su, along with area churches, offers overnight shelter and hospitality while homeless families participate in rigorous case management and family strategic planning. Children attend their school of origin, or attend daycare while their parents are working to achieve their goals. These include gaining employment, life skills and budgeting help, medical and public assistance benefits, attaining transportation, using thrift store vouchers for personal items, saving their food stamps and 80% of their income for future housing. In an average of 50 days, our families move into their own homes. The positive mentoring and hospitality of congregation members and volunteers means the world to our families and many long-term relationships are formed.
