Prepare for Next Year’s Garden at Perennial Sale

Prepare for Next Year’s Garden at Perennial Sale

Contributed by Sammy Taylor

Time keeps on keepin’ on! Even before the last harvest most gardeners are already thinking about the coming growing season. We’re preparing our gardens and greenhouses for the big winter sleep and preparing new spaces for new plants. Some may be thinking about a hard neck Garlic bed, a Sun Choke patch or a perennial herb bed all of which should be prepared this Fall.

The Meadow Lakes Bloomers Garden club annual perennial sale may be a good place for gardeners to begin those Autumn preparations. This year the sale will be 10:00 to 4:00 on Saturday September 6 at the Meadow Lakes Center at Parks and Pittman. This one-day event will sell local produce as well as a variety of perennial herbs, shrubs, flowers and edible plants.

Our local Bees and other pollinators enjoy the flower of the tall Comfrey plant (a big-leafed showy plant with blue flowers). The leaves can be used as a poultice for skin problems, and the entire plant makes a great compost tea. Fall is the best time to get those Raspberry canes in or move a Strawberry bed.  Several fruit Trees add to your property value and your future healthy eating! If you don’t find it at the Bloomers’ sale, experienced gardeners there can recommend a local vendor to sell you Alaska-adapted Trees.
